High tone in Moro: effects of prosodic categories and morphological domains

چکیده
This paper presents a description and analysis of the tonal system of Moro, a Kordofanian language of Sudan, showing that the distribution of H(igh) tone is sensitive to a number of morphological and prosodic factors. First, we demonstrate that the distribution of H on nouns is sensitive to the OCP, both within roots and with affixes. Nouns also exhibit lexical distinctions between forms that exhibit unbounded rightward spreading of H and those that show no spreading. We model this distinction using cophonologies. While the distribution of H on Moro verb stems bears some We are immensely grateful to our Moro speakers, Elyasir Julima and Ikhlas Elahmer, for sharing their language with us. We thank audiences at the 45th Annual Meeting of the Chicago Linguistic Society, the Annual Conference on African Linguistics 37 and 40, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the University of Florida, the University of California, Santa Barbara and Harvard University for useful feedback and comments. We appreciate in-depth comments and discussion from Eric Baković, Larry Hyman, Victor Manfredi, Andrew Nevins, David Odden, and participants in the San Diego Phonology Interest Group and UCSD Phonetics Laboratory meetings. The members of the Moro Language Project, particularly Farrell Ackerman and George Gibbard, helped in numerous, immeasurable ways in both checking the data and refining the analysis. Finally, two anonymous reviewers and the associate editors, Michael Kenstowicz and Junko Itô, provided us with challenging comments and advice for improving the paper, for which we are grateful. Portions of Sect. 4 of this paper will appear with a slightly different analysis under the title ‘Syllable weight and high tone in Moro’ in Proceedings from the Annual Meeting of the Chicago Linguistic Society 45. Categorizing Mandarin tones into listeners' native prosodic categories: the role of phonetic properties
Studies have shown that assimilating non-native tones to the categories of listeners’ native prosodic systems (e.g., tone, pitch-accent, and intonation) seems to be feasible (So, 2006; So and Best, 2008; So and Best, in press), and is consistent with the assumptions of the Perceptual Assimilation Model (Best, 1995, PAM). This raises an important question as to how adults perceive non-native lex...
متن کاملDistinguishing Phrase-Final and Phrase-Medial High Tone on Finally Stressed Words in Turkish
The goal of this paper is to investigate the nature of the high tones realized on finally stressed words in Turkish. Following Ipek & Jun’s [1] AM model of intonational phonology of Turkish, it was hypothesized that the high tone realized on the last syllable of a phrase (i.e., Intermediate Phrase (ip)) is realized differently from that of a phrase-medial prosodic word (PW), reflecting the pros...

This paper describes the design and evaluation of prosodically-sensitive concatenative units for a Persian text-to-speech (TTS) synthesis system. Thesyllables used are prosodically conditioned in the sense that a single conventional syllable is stored as different versions taken directly from the different prosodic domains of the prosodically labeled, read sentences. The three levels of the Per...
متن کاملCreaky Voice as a Function of Tonal Categories and Prosodic Boundaries
This study looks into the distribution of creaky voice in Mandarin in continuous speech. A creaky voice detector was used to automatically detect the appearance of creaky voice in a large-scale Mandarin corpus (Sinica COSPRO corpus). As the prosodic information has been annotated in the corpus, we were able to look at the distribution of creaky voice as a function of the interaction between ton...
متن کاملTone and timing: two problems and two methods for prosodic typology
After an overview of some recent work on prosodic typology, both tonal and rhythmic, it is argued that both symbolic and numeric computational methods are required in order to advance the field by using large annotated resources and developing consistent, precise and evaluable models. Symbolic modelling is illustrated with reference to the lexical and grammatical tone systems of West African la...
